Why Fitness Vocabulary Matters

Training plans, class descriptions, and fitness apps are packed with shorthand that can leave newer exercisers guessing. Rep (Repetition)

One complete execution of an exercise movement from start position back to start position. Rep count is the primary unit of training volume in resistance programming.

Set

A group of consecutive reps performed without a rest interval. Most programs specify both set count and rep count (e.g., 4×8 means four sets of eight reps).

Progressive Overload

The principle of incrementally increasing training stress — via load, volume, density, or difficulty — to continually drive physiological adaptation. Without it, fitness gains plateau.

Periodisation

The systematic planning of training across time, dividing programs into phases that vary intensity and volume to optimise adaptation and reduce overtraining.

VO₂ Max

The maximum volume of oxygen the body can utilise per minute during maximal exercise, measured in mL/kg/min. Higher values indicate greater aerobic capacity.

RPE

Rate of Perceived Exertion — a subjective scale used to quantify how hard exercise feels. A score of 7/10 RPE means the effort feels hard but sustainable for a limited time.

Lactate Threshold

The exercise intensity at which lactate builds in the bloodstream faster than it is cleared, causing fatigue. Training near this threshold improves sustained endurance performance.

Hypertrophy

An increase in the cross-sectional size of muscle fibres resulting from resistance training stimulus, sufficient protein intake, and recovery. Often targeted with moderate loads for higher reps.

1RM (One-Rep Maximum)

The maximum load that can be lifted for a single controlled repetition of an exercise. Used as a benchmark to prescribe relative training intensities (e.g., 75% of 1RM).

HIIT

High-Intensity Interval Training — a method alternating short bouts of near-maximal effort with recovery periods. Shown to improve aerobic and anaerobic fitness efficiently.

Zone Training

A heart-rate-based framework dividing exercise intensity into distinct zones (typically 1–5), each targeting different physiological adaptations from aerobic base building to speed development.

Tempo

The prescribed speed of each phase of a lift, usually written as a four-number code indicating seconds for the eccentric (lowering), pause, concentric (lifting), and top-pause phases.

  • Rep (Repetition): One complete movement cycle — for example, lowering and raising a dumbbell through a full curl. Rep count controls training volume and stimulus type.
  • Set: A group of consecutive reps performed without rest. Three sets of ten reps is written as 3×10.
  • Tempo: The speed of each phase of a lift, often written as a four-digit code (e.g., 3-1-2-0 = 3 sec down, 1 sec pause, 2 sec up, 0 sec pause). Slower tempos increase time under tension.
  • 1RM (One-Rep Maximum): The maximum load you can lift for exactly one complete, controlled repetition. Percentages of 1RM are used to prescribe training intensity (e.g., 70% 1RM for hypertrophy work).
  • Progressive Overload: Gradually increasing the demand placed on the body — through added weight, reps, sets, or reduced rest — so adaptation continues over time.
  • Periodisation: Organising training into planned phases (blocks) that vary volume and intensity systematically to peak performance and reduce overtraining risk. Common models include linear, undulating, and block periodisation.
  • Hypertrophy: An increase in muscle fibre size driven by sufficient volume, progressive overload, and adequate protein intake. Typically targeted with moderate loads and moderate-to-high rep ranges.

Cardio and Conditioning Terms
